The Churn: Lateral Moves and Promotions in The Am Law 200

Jones Day has announced the addition of five attorneys to its recently opened office in Düsseldorf, Germany: partner ULRICH BRAUER from Simmons & Simmons; partner KERSTIN MAST from Bird & Bird; and of counsel RALF RECKNAGEL from GSK. Brauer led the German corporate practice at Simmons & Simmons, where he focused on representing Japanese and Chinese clients in their German and European in-bound investment transactions. Mast has represented clients in international mergers and acquisitions and private equity transactions. Recknagel's corporate practice has included M&A transactions, private equity deals, and privitizations of public entities.

"We see tremendous opportunities in the region for sophisticated, global corporate counsel and are in contact with other well-known transactional lawyers from Düsseldorf whom we expect to join us soon,” said Ansgar Rempp, managing partner of the firm’s Düsseldorf office and coordinator of the German transactional practice, in a statement announcing the lateral additions.

Jones Day announced the opening of the Düsseldorf office—its third in Germany—in February, bringing its total number of offices worldwide to 37. The firm's two other German offices are in Munich and Frankfurt.

KEITH GOTTFRIED has joined Alston & Bird as a partner in the Washington, D.C., office. Gottfried will be a member of the firm's corporate transactions and securities group, where his practice will focus on M&A transactions, corporate governance matters, and other issues. Gottfried has previously practiced at Skadden Arps Slate, Meagher & Flom, served as general counsel and chief legal officer for Borland Software Corp., and also filled the GC role at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Miami's Bilzin Sumberg Baena Price & Axelrod has announced that trial lawyers MARTY STEINBERG and JEFFREY GUTCHESS have joined the firm as partners. Both arrive from Hunton & Williams, where their clients included representing Carnival Cruise Lines and Ryder System Inc.

Choate Hall & Stewart has hired STUART GLASS as a partner in its securities litigation group in Boston. Glass was most recently a partner at Goodwin Procter.

JAMES BURNS has joined Dickinson Wright as a partner in Washington, D.C. Burns, who will colead the firm's antitrust practice, was previously at Williams Mulllen, where he chaired the antitrust practice group.

Dinsmore & Shohl welcomes WHITNEY CALVERT as a corporate partner in the firm's Lexington, Kentucky, office. In joining Dinsmore, Calvert brings her practice, which focuses the mineral and energy sectors, from McBrayer McGinnis Leslie & Kirkland.

Duane Morris has announced the addition of partners MICHAEL MCMANUS and RODNEY SWEETLAND III to the firm's intellectual property practice in Washington, D.C. The two, who arrive from McKool Smith, will colead Duane Morris's International Trade Commission practice.

ROBERT HORWITZ has returned to Dykema Gossett as a senior counsel in the firm's Detroit office. A partner during a prior stint at Dykema, Horwitz rejoins the firm from Asset Acceptance Capital Corp., where he was chief litigation counsel for the past five years.

LAWRENCE ROBINS has joined Edwards Wildman Palmer's intellectual property department as a partner in Boston. Robins, who most recently was a Cambridge, Massachusetts–based partner at Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, is the seventh lateral partner addition to Edwards Wildman's intellectual property department over the past 12 months.

The former mayor of Evansville, Indiana, JONATHAN WEINZAPFEL, has joined the government team at Faegre Baker Daniels as a counsel. Weinzapfel, who will be based in Evansville, will assist clients in connection with public-private partnerships, economic development initiatives, and neighborhood revitalization programs.

K&L Gates has added ANDREW KOZUSKO III as a partner in the firm's intellectual property litigation practice. Pittsburgh-based Kozusko, whose practice focuses on representing generic pharmaceutical companies, joins K&L Gates from Duane Morris.

Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton has hired KANDACE WATSON as a corporate partner in the firm's San Diego office. Watson joins Kilpatrick Townsend from Baker & McKenzie.

MICHAEL VOLKOV has joined LeClairRyan as a shareholder in the litigation department. Volkov will divide his time between the firm's Alexandria, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., offices. His past positions include a 17-year stint as a federal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia. At LeClairRyan, he will focus on government compliance and enforcement matters and internal investigations.

The environmental and energy law firm Marten Law in San Francisco has hired KEVIN HAROFF as a partner. Haroff joins the firm from Shook, Hardy & Bacon, where he practiced in the environmental and toxic tort group.

McDermott Will & Emery has announced that Washington, D.C.–based attorney MARTIN MILNER has joined the firm as a tax partner. Milner previously practiced at Mayer Brown.

Perkins Coie has added ANDREW SHIPLEY as a partner and JOHN HENAULT as of counsel in the government contracts practice in Washington, D.C. Shipley arrives from Northrop Grumman Corp., where he was an assistant general counsel. Henault was previously at Cooley, where he practiced in the commercial litigation group.

SUSAN PERSICHILLI has joined Schiff Hardin as a counsel in the firm's restructuring, bankruptcy, and creditors' rights group in New York. Persichilli was formerly at GCG, Inc., a settlement administration company.

Ulmer & Berne has added STACY BAIM as counsel in Chicago in the firm's intellectual property and technology group. Baim was previously at Jones Day.

Atlanta-based corporate and securities attorney WALTER TINLEY ANDERSON III has joined Womble Carlyle as a partner. He most recently practiced at the Atlanta office of Paul Hastings.
