Breaking: Stanford Gets Public Defender
Posted by Zach Lowe
This just in: A judge has ruled that R. Allen Stanford, the Texas banker accused of a massive international $7 billion Ponzi scheme, is broke and cannot afford representation. The judge ordered that Stanford be supplied with a public defender, according to The New York Times.
That means Dick DeGuerin, the colorful Texas attorney who has represented several Lone Star luminaries, will likely not receive any payment for the months of work he has done representing Stanford since Stanford was indicted in June, according to the NYT.
Stanford had also turned to Patton Boggs partner Robert Luskin after a dispute with DeGuerin; Luskin filed initial paperwork to represent Stanford but then told the court he would only represent Stanford if the firm received some guarantee of future payment, as we've previously reported.
Luskin did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.
