Report: Dentons, Squire Sanders Mull Transatlantic Tie-Up

Posted by Ed Shanahan

Squire Sanders & Dempsey has held merger discussions with Denton Wilde Sapte, as The Am Law 100  firm continues to pursue ways of expanding its U.K. and European presence, reports sibling publication Legal Week.

The two firms, Legal Week reports, have held discussions regarding a merger at management level and there are expectations that a deal could be put together by the fall. The proposed union has not yet been generally discussed at partner level within Dentons, as the talks are at relatively early stages.

Dentons has been looking to broaden its coverage in emerging markets while Squire Sanders is looking to widen its U.K. and European capabilities.

Dentons chief executive Howard Morris declined to comment to Legal Week about Squire Sanders, stating that the firm’s policy is not to discuss any merger discussions it holds.

Morris did, however, concede that Dentons remained open-minded regarding potential U.S. tie-ups, commenting: “I think we would consider a merger proposal if we thought it would help us achieve our goals.”

Squire Sanders was not available for comment.
