Goodwin Procter Cuts 38 Lawyers, 36 Staff

Posted by Ross Todd

When The Am Law Daily checked in with Goodwin Procter chair Regina Pisa last month, she sounded a bit dour about the prospects for economic recovery in 2009. Given today's news, we can understand why.

"Oftentimes the economy sputters as it recovers," said Pisa who worked in Goodwin's financial services practice before taking on full-time management duties. "I don’t think we’re seeing the signs of it sputtering yet."

Sputtering or not, Above the Law reports that Goodwin Procter has laid off 38 associates and 36 staff.

Pisa's office broke the news via a firmwide memo today. Attorneys affected include associates and professional track attorneys. Staff cuts include paralegals, secretaries, and administrative staff. Most of those affected work in the firm's business law department. The firm's Boston and New York offices—its two largest—will be hardest hit, but the memo says that all departments and virtually all offices will be affected.
