BREAKING: Heller Dissolves

Posted by Drew Combs

[Updated Sept. 26 at 8:30 a.m.]

Adorning the walls of Heller Ehrman offices across the country are time lines highlighting monumental dates in the firm's storied 118-year history. Today will likely mark the end of that history and set up the eventual dismantling of those time lines.

According to Am Law Daily sibling publication The Recorder, Heller partners will vote to dissolve the firm today.

The San Francisco firm's chairman, Matthew Larrabee, announced the pending dissolution during a meeting Thursday afternoon. The partnership, Larrabee told the firm in a videoconference, "concluded that dissolution was unavoidable," as The Recorder reports.

The move comes on the heels of failed merger talks with Chicago-based Mayer Brown and the departure of 14 partners to Covington & Burling. In recent months Heller Ehrman has had at least preliminary merger discussions with more than half a dozen firms including Baker & McKenzie and Winston & Strawn.

Employees will be paid for 60 days; a small group of staff to be retained after that.
