SEC Adds Another Am Law 100 Partner to Regulatory Ranks

Three months after SEC enforcement director Robert Khuzami announced the formation of five specialized units to combat corporate fraud, the agency is dipping into the Am Law 100 partnership ranks to staff up those divisions. And other departments outside the domain of enforcement are getting Am Law attention as well.

Back from Banking: Wilson Sonsini Picks Up Top BofA/Merrill Banker

Warren de Wied, formerly cohead of M&A at Fried Frank before decamping for Merrill Lynch two years ago, has returned to the Am Law 100 fold after serving as a managing director in Merrill's M&A group. The Am Law Daily caught up with de Wied to talk about the move.

Remembering Major Michael Weston

Major Michael Weston, a 37-year-old Harvard Law School graduate, was killed a week ago in Afghanistan. A memorial service in remembrance of Weston on Monday in Washington, D.C., drew more than 1,000 mourners.

Legal Sector Loses 5,800 Jobs in October

According to a monthly jobs report released on Friday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the nation lost 190,000 jobs in October as the unemployment rate jumped to 10.2 percent. The legal sector wasn’t spared. When data is seasonally adjusted, the legal field shed another 5,800 jobs.

Ropes & Gray Lawyer Arrested in Insider Trading Probe

Federal prosecutors have filed criminal charges against 20 hedge fund managers, traders, corporate executives, and at least two lawyers in connection with the government's crackdown on insider trading. Two of those individuals are an associate at Ropes & Gray and an associate at a personal injury firm in Brooklyn. Another previously worked as an associate at Sullivan & Cromwell.
