S&C Lands Freshfields Finance Partner in London

Posted by Tom Huddleston Jr.

Sullivan & Cromwell announced today that it has expanded its London finance practice with the addition of former Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer partner Presley Warner.

LegalWeek, an Am Law Daily sister publication, reports that Warner will join the firm's credit and leveraged finance practice after 16 years at Freshfields. He advises private equity and corporate borrowers on such matters as acquisitions, disposals, and debt restructurings. Warner, who is qualified to practice in the United Kingdom, New York, Massachusetts, and Canada, also completed a secondment at Goldman Sachs in 2008-09 and the investment firm remains a major client.

With Warner's departure, Freshfields's London finance practice is now down to 37 partners, LegalWeek reports. Recent departures from the group include partners Chris Howard, David Ereira, and Brian Gray, all of whom left for Linklaters at different points in the past four years.

Tim Emmerson, head of the U.K. M&A practice for S&C and also a former Freshfields partner, welcomed Warner in a statement: "London is a primary center of leveraged finance for a significant number of M&A transactions, both in the U.K. and also across Europe. In recent years, borrowers have increasingly sought creatively structured and robust leveraged finance arrangements which will withstand the pressures of more volatile markets. Presley is one of a small number of legal advisers in London with the creativity and expertise to deliver solutions of this kind to European borrowers on major deals."
