Howrey Terminates 32 Staffers

News of the layoffs was first reported on Monday by Above the Law, which noted the cuts were made over the course of the last week. No attorneys were among those affected by the layoffs.
"This right-sizing of the firm will allow Howrey to concentrate its resources on its three principal practice groups--antitrust, intellectual property, and complex business litigation and to maintain our strong competitive position," the firm said in a statement. "We regret that this decision was necessary and will provide resources to help those impacted to transition to new employment. This action, while difficult, is necessary to better meet the needs of our clients and the demands of the marketplace."
Howrey has had a rough go of it recently. The American Lawyer's Julie Triedman reported on Howrey's tough year in the November 2010 issue of the magazine. Profits per partner at the 600-lawyer firm plunged 35 percent in 2009 and Howrey axed 29 associates and 65 staffers in February of this year. In March, we reported that Howrey was planning to push out as many as 30 partners.
Howrey is not alone in its head count struggles. The National Law Journal, a sibling publication, released data this week showing that head count at the nation's 250-largest law firms had dropped for the second year in a row. Citing a recent survey by the National Association for Law Placement (NALP), The NLJ also reported that more than half of law firm recruiting and professional development departments had lost employees through job cuts.
As noted in this space last week, the legal services sector lost 300 jobs during the month of October, according to data compiled by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
