Another Am Law Star Goes In-House

Posted by Zach Lowe

Finley We've seen three Cravath, Swaine & Moore partners move in-house in the last four months, and today we've got another star Am Law 100 partner doing the same: John Finley, cochair of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett's M&A group, is moving to take the top in-house spot at Blackstone Group, according to a statement the private equity fund released today.

Finley has worked on too many landmark transactions to list here. Some notable ones in the last couple of years include his representation of Lehman Brothers in the sale of its North American operations to Barclays and Mars Incorporated's move to snag the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company for $23.1 billion in a leveraged buyout-style deal. His work on that matter for Mars earned him a spot in The American Lawyer's list of Dealmakers of the Year in 2009.

Blackstone is, of course, a longtime Simpson client. The firm advised Blackstone on its landmark IPO in 2007 and has advised the PE giant on dozens of transactions. (Seriously: Check out the list.) "This is a terrific opportunity for John to join a highly valued and long-standing client of our firm," Simpson said in a statement released today. "We wish him well and look forward to continuing to work closely with him and his colleagues at Blackstone."

It's great and all to see that some firms still treat their older partner right:
