White & Case's Black Monday
Posted by Vivia Chen
Let's hope the dismal news coming out of White & Case today won’t be catching. On Monday afternoon, the 2074-lawyer firm announced that it's shedding a whopping 200 associates and 200 administrative staff people. That's on top of the 70 associates the firm laid off last November.
Even more ominous is that the announcement says the firm also is evaluating its partnership, "which will result in a reduction in the number of partners, commensurate with current and anticipated business needs."
The news also is bad for those about to join the firm: White & Case says it will be "deferring the start date of approximately 60 percent of this year's incoming associate class in the U.S. until 2010."
None of this bodes well for a speedy economic recovery.
We'll be talking to firm chair Hugh Verrier and will update the post with his comments on today's cuts within the hour.
