Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Bryan Cave-Powell Goldstein Merger

Posted by Zach Lowe

The Fulton County Daily Report, an Am Law Daily sibling publication, has an in-depth look at how the Bryan Cave--Powell Goldstein merger went down.

Powell Goldstein (known as PoGo, second only to MoFo in the Am Law Daily's unofficial nickname rankings), had been searching for a merger partner since last year amid a gradual decline in head count and status in the Atlanta market. The firm first eyed Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice but decided to pursue a partner with a larger global practice. Negotiations with Bryan Cave started in July, and PoGo grew excited about the combination after Bryan Cave assured them all of PoGo's lawyers and employees will be retained, the Daily Report says.

How happy is PoGo to combine its 220 lawyers with Bryan Cave's nearly 1,000?

"It's like winning the Super Bowl and the World Series all in one," W. Scott Sorels, a veteran PoGo partner, told the Daily Report.

Powell Goldstein will even get to keep its name on its Atlanta office for two years (the office will be known as Bryan Cave Powell Goldstein). Otherwise, the PoGo name is set to disappear.

While lengthy, the Daily Report's account is definitely worth reading--especially for those interested in why some mergers happen and others don't.
