THE CHURN: Lateral Moves and Promotions in The Am Law 200
Posted by Kirstin Maguire
Some surprising news on the Churn front came through early this week, when Above The Law reported Monday that former Sullivan & Cromwell associate Aaron Charney has landed a new gig at Clifford Chance. As our readers surely recall, Charney sued S&C in January 2007 for sexual orientation discrimination, only to be fired and countersued by the firm, which charged the lawyer with violating client confidences and stealing documents from a partner's office. Both sides reached a confidential settlement last fall. The likely fallout for Charney, suggested by the Wall Street Journal's law blog shortly after, was a long stretch of unemployment, as ATL recounts. Now, nine months later, a job. Considering how nasty things got between Charney and his former firm, gainful employment has come along sooner than expected. Clifford Chance confirmed the hire to ATL and The Am Law Daily: "Mr. Charney will join us in early September as a fifth-year associate. We believe he is a talented lawyer who will add even more bench strength to our mergers and acquisitions practice," firm spokesperson Mike Kachel said via e-mail.
As reported today by Tony Lin in sibling publication New York Law Journal, Charney's ability to land another law firm job "after being involved in such a high-profile suit against his former firm suggests such litigation may no longer be career suicide, provided the lawyer has desirable skills.
"Clifford Chance and other major London firms have been especially eager to boost their New York M&A capabilities," Lin reported.
